Garage Door Panel Replacement
A stray ball went through one of the window panes in the top section.
In plain words
The first real decision is whether a section is the right scale of repair. A shallow dent in the middle of a steel skin can often be worked out or filled and painted. A crease that reaches a joint, an end stile or a hinge point changes how the section carries load and is usually a section replacement. Damage spread over several sections, widespread rust, or a door whose design is no longer made pushes the conversation toward a new door. Panel replacement sits in the middle of that range, and a good assessment places your door on it honestly before anything is ordered.
How the visit goesFrom outside, the horizontal groove between two sections now steps sideways by a centimetre. One section has shifted on its hinges after a roller jumped the track, and on the way down the door catches at exactly that point.

How the visit goes

One section, or is it time for the whole door?
A single damaged section on a door that is otherwise sound is a clear case for a section. The picture changes when damage crosses two or three sections, when rust has taken hold along more than one edge, when older sections have warped or delaminated, or when the design is no longer produced. It also changes when you would like insulation, windows or a different look that only a new door provides. The technician lays the two options side by side, describing what each includes and what you would have afterwards, so the choice is made on the whole door's condition rather than on the one dent that prompted the call.
Opener limits, force and the reversal test
Only after the door runs correctly by hand is the opener reconnected. The technician runs the door through several cycles, resetting the open and close limits so the door seals at the floor without straining, and adjusting the force setting so the opener stops and reverses when it meets resistance. The photo-eyes are checked for alignment and the reversal is tested with a board laid flat under the door. Hinges and rollers on the new section get a light coat of lubricant, every fastener is given a final check, and the door is left closed with the joints tight and the seal sitting flat.
The colour over the first season
A fresh factory finish beside weathered sections shows for a while, and you should expect that rather than be surprised by it. Sun and weather will change the new colour somewhat over a season or two, but weathering does not reliably bring it into line with older sections, and a visible mismatch can persist even with the same factory colour designation. If the contrast is more than you would like, the door can be repainted as a whole with an exterior paint suited to the finish, which also refreshes the older sections. Keep the colour name and code from the order; it makes a later touch-up or a second section far simpler to match.

What affects the quote
Spring work required
A bottom section means torsion springs are unwound and rewound, or, on an extension-spring door, the door is raised and secured so the springs relax and its hooks and cables are reset instead. A section changing the door's weight may call for a balance adjustment.
Door width and section size
A section for a double door is nearly twice the length of one for a single door, with more steel, more hinges and a heavier lift. Section height and thickness feed into the same line.
Hinges, rollers and brackets
Hardware bent or worn by the damage is replaced along with the section. The quote lists hinges by joint position, rollers by type, and any bottom or top brackets, so you can see what accompanies the section itself.
What to have ready
- Are any other sections dented, rusted or out of line?
- Would you consider a whole new door if a matching section is unavailable?
- Are any hinges, rollers or cables visibly bent, loose or hanging?
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
QuestionsHow long does it take to get a replacement section?
Sections are made to order for a specific model, size, position and colour rather than kept in stock, so there is a lead time from the manufacturer. It varies with the maker, the colour and the season, and the technician confirms the expected timing when the order is placed. In the meantime the door is left in a safe state, either in normal use or braced and closed, depending on the damage.
How do I know whether the damage is only cosmetic?
Watch the door move. A cosmetic dent leaves the section flat at the joints, the door travelling without a catch, and the hinges and rollers seated normally. Signs that the damage goes further include a crease that reaches a joint or stile, a hinge screw that has pulled out, a roller sitting crooked in the track, a gap of daylight at a joint, or a shudder as that section reaches the track curve. Any of those calls for a proper assessment.
Is a panel the same thing as a section?
In everyday speech, yes: people call the horizontal pieces of a garage door panels. In the trade's own terminology a section is the full-width piece that hinges to its neighbours, and a panel is one of the raised or recessed shapes embossed across it, so a door might have four sections of four panels each. When you ask for panel replacement, the technician understands you mean the section, and will confirm which one.
